Eighteen staff of Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) drawn from Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, and Kibale Conservation Areas and UWA headquarters have completed a training course in Environment and Sustainable Development for Oil and Gas industry.
The training which lasted between 8-12th October 2012 was organized by UWA but sponsored and conducted by TOTAL Gas Exploration and Production (Total E&P) in Murchison Falls National Park one of the protected areas where oil and gas activities are currently taking place.
The main objective of the training was to enhance staff understanding of oil and gas issues so as to manage the likely impacts of oil exploration and production on environment in general and wildlife protected areas in particular.
Areas covered included basic information on oil and gas, the environmental risk and management, the oil spill contingency plan, waste management and stake holder relationship among others.
TOTAL Trainers, Patricia Mani and Frederique Michaud shared their experiences on oil and gas impacts and how best they can be managed, the duo having worked in many countries.
Participants who included the Director Conservation Mr. John Makombo exhibited enthusiasm in exercises and quizzes and were at the end of the course awarded certificates of merit.
